What Causes One Person To Succeed And Another To Fail?

Well this is a very loaded question.  

Normally I would answer this question with, “There are no failures, only quitters!”

And this statement is absolutely true.  

I also believe that there is a majority of network marketers out there that are spinning their wheels.

I would never consider this to be a failure, but it sure as heck doesn’t feel like success! I know because I was once in those shoes!

I would tell you to never give up, but…

I think there also needs to be some major reasons you may not be “winning” in your network marketing journey.

Let’s look at your upline shall we?

Now I am not a supporter of comparing yourself to anyone. Let me make that extremely clear. 

However, I do want to point out a few things that got your upline to where they are now. 

Your upline has something that you may or may not have… 

This does depend on where you find yourself in your businesses compensation plan.

Wanna know what that one thing is? It’s called a NETWORK.  

The thing that makes or breaks a person is their built in network when they join the company. 

Let me give you an example

Let me tell you the tale of Sally and Maria, two standup hardworking ladies.

Sally is a 42 year old well known public figure in her town. She is the mayor. 

Sally knows everyone and people adore her. She has a real likable personality and people can’t help but flock to her. 

Maria is a 20 year old college drop out that works as a waitress.  

She is also very likable, but tends to be more on the shy side. 

She enjoys one on one time with close friends, and doesn’t like large groups of people.  

So Then What Happens?

Both Sally and Maria join their company on the same day.  

They are super excited about the future, have the same hard-working ethics, and can’t wait to get started

Sally gets going and tells everyone she knows about her new business. People are drawn to her. 

They love her success and simply want more of her. People join her team in droves.

Maria, on the other hand, doesn’t have it so easy. 

She also tells everyone she knows about her new business with the same excitement and vigor as Sally.

BUT… Her results are less than desirable.

A few close friends join, but Maria finds herself working longer and harder to find recruits.

So What Was Different?

Think about the two different networks of a 20 year old waitress and a 42 year old mayor.

Night and day difference if you really think about it. 

For one thing, as we get older, we tend to develop more contacts.  

Next, let’s consider each personality. Both are likable, but Maria’s personality is more shy and less assuming than Sally’s.

Then finally, consider the credibility of a waitress compared to a mayor.

Am I making sense so far? Can you notice the stark difference between these two characters?

The Unfair Advantage 

I think that everyone would agree with me that Sally has a pretty unfair advantage over Maria in this case. 

What’s funny to me is that most network marketing uplines would say that everyone is on an even playing field.  

It’s all a numbers game. You have have to keep talking to people and eventually you will find your tribe. 

Heck, I used to be the upline that would say stuff like that… Until I got smart… 

You see, the network you find yourself in before you join your network marketing business is the network that could make or break your business…. 

Unless, you find away to cheat the odds and build a network of your dreams in an ultra targeted and purposeful way. 

Wanna know how?

Thats right… A whole world is right at your finger tips just waiting to be unlocked! 

What world is that? It’s called the inter webs, and it’s literally never ending in possibilities.

What’s cool about the internet is that you never have to have a mindset of scarcity. 

There is always be a never ending stream of highly qualified prospects, waiting to join your business. 

Does that excite you? I know it sends chills down my spine in a glorious kinda way!

Here’s The Catch…

The thing is that most network marketers don’t understand how to unlock the power of the internet. 

Instead of using it to its magnificent potential, most network marketers post their products all over social media. 

This can leave a bad taste in the mouth of friends and family that may see these posts.  

What really stinks is that friends and family actually start to unfriend you for you posts.

They are tired of seeing spammy posts and before and after photos all over their news feed.

So they do the nicest thing they can possibly think of. 

They quietly unfriend or hide the offending newsfeed from their sight.  

This definitely makes my inner business lady groan with disappointment.  

Here’s What’s Really Crappy

At this point, many network marketers realize that friends and family aren’t interested in their products or joining them in their business.

What can sometimes happen is instead of pushing forward, the network marketer decides that maybe this isn’t for them.

So they quit…  

On the flip side of that, you have the personalities that just dig in harder and only see this as a small setback.

Instead of quitting, they decide to go after the cold market… On the internet…

So What Do They Do?

I have literally seen network marketers friend request complete strangers.

Almost immediately after friending these strangers, they decide to message their new friends.

They say things like, “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that no one can miss!” 

So they proceed to vomit their opportunity all over others.

How do I know this… Well I get these messages from strangers on a daily basis.

It makes me want to laugh and cry all at the same time. 

There is a better way to tap into the internet that doesn’t involve spamming the crap out of everyone that has a social media account.

Let me just say that the internet is an amazing tool if you know how to use it.

Unlike any other time in history, we are able to network and connect with people in other states, time zones, and countries!

It’s exciting really!  

What’s really cool is that it prospects are right there, waiting to be recruited into your business.

The secret is knowing how to connect with people in a meaningful way that is not spammy or inauthentic. 

Unfortunately, most network marketers have not been taught how to do this.

Luckily for you, I have some ideas that will expand your network throughout the endless world of the internet.

Connecting With Others Is Key

No one wants to be sold anything. EVER. PERIOD!

So when meeting new people on the internet, it’s all about connecting with them on their level. 

When you friend request people, have a conversation with them. Ask them questions about themselves.

What’s their family life like? What do they do for work? You know, the same questions you would ask anyone that you just met. 

It’s really not that hard. 

Many network marketers find themselves with placing their agenda first. 

I know, because I used to do it. 

I would think and say things like, “My business is amazing! If you knew what is best for you, you would listen to what I have to share with you.”

All this did was drive people further away from me.

Place The Needs Of Your New Friends First

How I do this is by asking people pointed questions about themselves.  

What’s amazing is that people will generally open up and share quite a bit about themselves if you are genuine. 

There is a purpose to my questions that I ask

I’m always looking for a need that someone might share with me.  

What is their pain point? What drives them to get up in the morning and keeps them awake at night.

Everything they do is driven by a need.

My job is to be a detective and ask questions in such a way that I discover what these things are.

What Do I Do With My Findings?

Well you see, if I’ve done my detective work properly, I will have set myself up for asking them to take a look at my business.  

My favorite way to position myself is as their hero.

How I do this is by asking them this question.  

“If I could show you how to help (insert their pain that they shared with you), would you take a look at a quick video presentation?”

That’s it!  

I never asked them to join my business or buy my products. I didn’t even tell them I what company I was with.

I simply became their friend, asked them questions, found their pain, and then offered a solution to their pain.

It’s pretty cool if you ask me!

It doesn’t matter what your network currently looks like.

  3. Karin, you make some excellent points. This should be required reading for all new network marketers. There’s nothing more annoying than accepting a friend request only to have that new contact bombard you with their sales pitch. Thank you for posting this. 🙂
